American Educational Research Journal

As an international journal, the articles provide a forum for exchanging insights throughout the world. The journal publishes manuscripts that advance scholarship on service-learning in teacher education through descriptions of empirical research, synthesis of research, analysis of policy, or discussion of theoretical positions. Although articles do not focus solely on description of a program, practitioner research is featured. The journal also publishes book reviews.

This peer-reviewed journal focuses on citizenship teaching and learning in all contexts, for all ages, within and beyond schools. It brings together the work of researchers, policy-makers, administrators and practicing professionals in this important area.

Collaborations: A Journal of Community-Based Research and Practice

Collaborations: A Journal of Community-Based Research and Practice is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal, sponsored by the University of Miami and Rutgers University. It is a site for sharing research and practice emanating from university-community collaborations. It was created to highlight research that describes, examines, and evaluates the many different forms of university-community collaborations.

Community Development Journal

Since 1966 the leading international journal in its field, covering a wide range of topics, reviewing significant developments and providing a forum for cutting-edge debates about theory and practice. It adopts a broad definition of community development to include policy, planning and action as they impact on the life of communities. We particularly seek to publish critically focused articles which challenge received wisdom, report and discuss innovative practices, and relate issues of community development to questions of social justice, diversity and environmental sustainability.

Community-Engaged Scholarship for Health

On this website you will find high-quality tools and resources that can be directly downloaded or obtained from the author, typically free of charge. All products posted on CES4Health.info have been reviewed and recommended by expert academic and community reviewers. CES4Health.info is a component of Community-Campus Partnerships for Health’s Faculty for the Engaged Campus project. The project aims to strengthen community-engaged career paths in the academy and is supported by a grant from the US Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. Community-Campus Partnerships for Health is a US-based non-profit organization that promotes health through partnerships between communities and higher educational institutions.

ENGAGE!

ENGAGE! is committed to advancing the field of community engaged research (CER) and community based participatory research (CBPR) in urban settings, nationally and internationally. The journal addresses current issues, and challenges, facing urban communities. ENGAGE! invites discussion and development of empirical, conceptual, and theoretical articles that make substantial contributions to the field in all areas of community engaged research, evaluation and assessment. The journal provides a forum for community scholars and university scholarly exchange of research findings ideas that advance knowledges that make a societal impact.

International Journal for Service-Learning in Engineering

The International Journal for Service Learning in Engineering,  Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship is a peer-reviewed electronic journal offered free, semi-annually, over the World Wide Web. The Journal welcomes manuscripts based on original work with a specific focus or implication for service learning in engineering, humanitarian engineering, and social entrepreneurship, or related service learning pedagogy. The International Journal of Research on Service-Learning in Teacher Education uses a blind, peer-review process. IJRSLTE provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

The International Undergraduate Journal for Service-learning, Leadership and Social Change

The International Undergraduate Journal for Service Learning, Leadership, and Social Change is peer-reviewed journal dedicated to providing undergraduate students a venue to discuss their service-learning projects and experiences.

The Journal considers three types of articles:

  1. Articles that discuss the development of a service-learning project and the impact of the project on the community served;
  2. A case study of a service-learning project;
  3. A reflection on service-learning and the development of personal leadership.

Gateways: International Journal of Community Research and Engagement

Gateways is a refereed journal concerned with the practice and processes of university-community engagement. It provides a forum for academics, practitioners and community representatives to explore issues and reflect on practices relating to the full range of engaged activity. The journal publishes evaluative case studies of community engagement initiatives; analyses of the policy environment; and theoretical reflections that contribute to the scholarship of engagement.

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

The Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education is an on-line, refereed journal concerned with exploring community engagement and community-based learning perspective, research, and practice. It publishes accounts of a range of research focusing on practical and theoretical insights and understanding, in higher education and across the disciplines and professions. There is a focus on case studies emphasizing community engagement and engaged learning practices, methodology, and pedagogy.

Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship (JCES) 

The Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship (JCES) is a peer-reviewed international journal through which faculty, staff, students, and community partners disseminate scholarly works. JCES integrates teaching, research, and community engagement in all disciplines, addressing critical problems identified through a community-participatory process.

Journal of Community Practice

The Journal of Community Practice is an interdisciplinary journal grounded in social welfare. The journal provides a forum for community practice, including community organizing, planning, social administration, organizational development, community development, social action, and social change. The journal contributes to the advancement of knowledge related to numerous disciplines, including social work and the social sciences, urban planning, social and economic development, community organizing, policy analysis, urban and rural sociology, community health, public administration, and nonprofit management. As a forum for authors and a resource for readers, this journal makes an invaluable contribution to practice in community settings from conceptualization to implementation to evaluation.

Journal of Experiential Education

The Journal of Experiential Education (JEE) is an international, peer-reviewed journal which publishes refereed articles on experiential education in diverse contexts. The JEE provides a forum for the empirical and theoretical study of issues concerning experiential learning, program management and policies, educational, developmental, and health outcomes, teaching and facilitation, and research methodology.

The Journal of Higher Education

The Journal of Higher Education publishes original research reporting on the academic study of higher education as a broad enterprise. We publish the highest quality empirical, theoretically grounded work addressing the main functions of higher education and the dynamic role of the university in society. We seek to publish scholarship from a wide variety of theoretical perspectives and disciplinary orientations. Articles appearing in the Journal employ an array of methodological approaches, and we welcome work from scholars across a range of career stages.

Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement

The mission of the JHEOE is to serve as the premier peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal to advance theory and practice related to all forms of outreach and engagement between higher education institutions and communities. This includes highlighting innovative endeavors; critically examining emerging issues, trends, challenges, and opportunities, and reporting on studies of impact in the areas of public service, outreach, engagement, extension, engaged research, community-based research, community-based participatory research, action research, public scholarship, service-learning, and community service.

Journal of Service Learning in Higher Education

The Journal of Service Learning in Higher Education is an online, international, peer-reviewed journal for the dissemination of original research regarding effective institutional-community partnerships. Our primary emphasis is to provide an outlet for sharing the methodologies and pedagogical approaches that lead to effective community-identified outcomes. The Journal of Service Learning in Higher Education is a subscription-free journal with a review board made up of various academic disciplines of the member institutions of the University of Louisiana system as well as other nationally and internationally accredited colleges and universities and affiliated organizations.

Metropolitan Universities Journal

Metropolitan Universities Journal (MUJ) is the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities’ (CUMU) quarterly online journal. Founded in 1990, MUJ disseminates scholarship and research relevant to urban and metropolitan universities. Articles amplify the mission of CUMU by reinforcing the value of place-based institutions and illuminating our collective work of supporting the changing needs of our students, institutions, and cities. MUJ publishes manuscripts on topics pertinent to urban and metropolitan institutions. Most issues are organized thematically and edited by a guest editor(s) who invites prospective authors to prepare submissions. Guest editors are typically selected from CUMU member institutions and represent a variety of academic backgrounds and fields of expertise.

Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning

The Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning, an international, peer-reviewed journal that publishes research, theory, and pedagogy pertinent to service-learning and civic engagement. As the publisher of MJCSL, we respond to the continuously-emerging challenges we encounter in our communities by advancing innovative and interdisciplinary scholarship that informs and enhances our work to provide a crucible for transformational learning, service, and community impact. MJCSL is a crucial part of our mission to lead higher education in demonstrating our relevance – our centrality to building and sustaining healthy communities – and the benefits that accrue with engaged scholarship.

Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly

Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly publishes high-quality peer-reviewed manuscripts from a diverse array of disciplinary and methodological perspectives on nonprofits, philanthropy, voluntary action, and civil society across the globe. The journal publishes full-length articles, research notes, and book reviews. NVSQ, published bi-monthly, is the official journal of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA).

Partnerships: A Journal of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement

Partnerships recognizes that successful engaged learning depends on effective partnerships between students, faculty, community agencies, administrators, disciplines, and more. The articles in this peer-reviewed journal focus on how theories and practices can inform and improve such partnerships, connections, and collaborations. Studies co-authored by faculty, students, and/or community partners; or examining practices across disciplines or campuses; or exploring international networks, are all encouraged.

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

A new journal devoted to promoting a culture of engagement between the university and region through the creation, application, and integration of knowledge. PRISM is multi-disciplinary, publishing quality, peer-reviewed research articles, case studies and applied research articles, and reflections across the full range of disciplinary perspectives.

Progress in Community Health Partnerships 

Progress in Community Health Partnerships (PCHP) is a national, peer-reviewed journal whose mission is to identify and publicize model programs that use community partnerships to improve public health, promote progress in the methods of research and education involving community health partnerships, and stimulate action that will improve the health of people and communities. The first scholarly journal dedicated to Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), PCHP is a must for public health professionals and the libraries that serve them.

Public: A Journal of Imagining America

Public is a peer-reviewed, multimedia e-journal focused on humanities, arts, and design in public life. It aspires to connect what we can imagine with what we can do. We are interested in projects, pedagogies, resources, and ideas that reflect rich engagements among diverse participants, organizations, disciplines, and sectors.

Reflections: A Journal of Writing, Service-Learning and Community Literacy

Communityliteracy.org is a website that provides information about universities and their respective communities. Our mission is to promote literacy and education within university communities nationwide. We believe that by providing accurate and up-to-date information, students will be better equipped to make informed decisions about their higher education. Our website includes a directory of universities and their respective communities. This directory provides information about the size of the community, the type of community (i.e. urban, suburban, or rural), and the average cost of living. In addition, the directory includes links to community resources such as library services and local businesses.

The Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research 

Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research is a refereed, multi-disciplinary, online undergraduate journal dedicated to publishing exceptional intellectual and reflective work by undergraduates on service learning and community-based research and all related curriculum- and/or research-based public community engagement activities. Published work will advance knowledge in these subject areas. The editorial team of the Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research encourages undergraduates to pursue their own intellectual projects and to join the academic conversation.

Voluntas: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations

Voluntas, the official journal of the International Society for Third-Sector Research (ISTR), is an interdisciplinary journal that provides a central forum for worldwide research in the area between the state, market, and household sectors. The journal publishes full-length articles and book reviews.

Voluntas is essential reading for all those engaged in research on the Third Sector (voluntary and nonprofit organizations) including economists, lawyers, political scientists, psychologists, sociologists, and social and public policy analysts.
